Opscidia Browser Extension — Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 29, 2026

Overview

The Opscidia Browser Extension (“the Extension”) is operated by OPSCIDIA SAS (9 Rue des Colonnes, 75002 Paris, France). It allows users to import scientific articles and PDFs directly from their browser into their Opscidia projects (app.opscidia.com).

This policy explains what data the Extension accesses, why, and how it is handled in compliance with applicable data protection laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Data We Access

  • Authentication information: The Extension stores your Opscidia session token locally in your browser (via chrome.storage.local) so you don’t have to log in again every time you use it. This token is used solely to authenticate your requests to the Opscidia backend (app.opscidia.com).

  • Page content: When you open the Extension on a webpage, it reads the content of the currently active tab to detect whether the page is a scientific article or PDF using standard citation metadata (title, authors, DOI, publication date). This detection happens locally in your browser and is passive — no page content is read or transmitted unless you explicitly click “Import.”

  • HTML fallback on import: If the Extension cannot extract sufficient metadata from a page using standard citation tags, it sends the full HTML of that specific page to Opscidia’s backend as a fallback to attempt server-side extraction. This only happens when you click “Import” on that page — never automatically, and never on pages you have not chosen to import.

  • PDF files: When you choose to import a PDF (either detected on the page or attached from the current tab), the file is uploaded to Opscidia’s secure storage (via Scaleway S3) and linked to the project you selected.

  • Preferences: The Extension stores lightweight, non-sensitive preferences locally, such as your last-selected Opscidia project, to improve your experience across sessions.

What We Do Not Collect

The Extension does not collect:

  • Health information

  • Financial or payment information

  • Location data

  • Browsing history outside of pages you explicitly choose to import

  • Keystrokes, mouse activity, or personal communications (emails, messages)

How Data Is Used

All data accessed by the Extension is used exclusively to provide its core functionality: authenticating you with Opscidia and importing the articles/PDFs you select into your Opscidia projects. We do not use this data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to providing this service.

Data Sharing

We do not sell, rent, or transfer user data to third parties, except as strictly necessary to operate the Extension (i.e., transmitting data to Opscidia’s own backend infrastructure, which you already use via the main web platform). We do not use your data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.

Data Retention & Your Rights

  • Local Storage: Authentication tokens and preferences are stored locally in your browser and are deleted when you log out or uninstall the Extension.

  • Server Storage: Imported articles, PDFs, and HTML fallbacks sent to Opscidia are stored on our secure servers under the same terms as content uploaded directly through app.opscidia.com.

  • Your GDPR Rights: In accordance with the GDPR and applicable privacy laws, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, or object to the processing of your personal data, as well as the right to data portability. You can exercise these rights at any time by contacting us.
